Nicole R. Robinson

Professor of Music Education and Associate Vice President for Equity and DiversityUniversity of Utah

Dr. Nicole R. Robinson is currently Associate Vice President for Equity and Diversity Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Leadership Fellow, and a Professor of Music Education at the University of Utah. Prior to joining the faculty in 2013, she held positions at Syracuse University, University of Memphis, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Robinson has earned national recognition for her community engagement projects, university-district partnership models, and her ability to create sustainable, reform-oriented professional learning communities particularly in large, urban districts.

She researches issues of access to quality music education for traditionally racialized and marginalized children, socio-cultural inequities in music education practices and programs, and (re)conceptualizing practices to support a critical consciousness for inclusive excellence among music educators. Dr. Robinson is regularly invited to guest lecture at professional meetings, school districts, and colleges and universities around the country. She has presented her research at national and international conferences and has published in several professional research journals including Journal of Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, General Music Today, Music Educators Journal, Journal of National Association for the Education of Young Children and Action, Criticism and Theory in Music Education. Also, she co-authored two textbooks: Teaching Elementary Music: Integrating Music with Other Academic Subjects (2011) and General Music: A K-12 Experience (2016). Dr. Robinson began her teaching career as an elementary and middle school music teacher in Durham Public Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools in North Carolina. She earned a BA and MM in Music Education from North Carolina Central University and a PhD in Music Education from The Florida State University.
